The Riddle

The Riddle

Samson, now a grown man, was walking around in the city of Timnah one day. He caught sight of a beautiful woman and immediately went back to his home to ask his parents to fetch her for him as a wife. On the way there a lion attacked Samson, but the Spirit of the Lord was upon him and he defeated the lion with his bare hands. In his pride, this became the perfect excuse to set up a riddle to place a bet and win himself 30 new garments at his wedding party. But we should be careful with what we say or do in moments of pride because just like Samson we might end up losing more than we imagine instead.

Judges 14:14
In yesterday’s episode we heard the story of Samson’s parents receiving unexpected news – they were going to have a baby. And Samson wouldn’t be just any baby, so God sent an angel to deliver the news and special instructions for how the boy was to be raised. It was a story of wise parents seeking wisdom in parenting, and because of their faithfulness Samson would grow as one set apart. In today’s reading we’ll learn how Samson grew stronger than any other man, but how his physical strength was overcome by the weakness of his will. As he gives in to lust over a pagan Philistine woman, his desires and pride will be his undoing.
