Jonah and the Withered Tree

Jonah and the Withered Tree

Jonah, now on dry land, is once again confronted by the voice of God telling him to go to Nineveh. Though it was not his desire, he obeyed. When he finally arrived he gave a sermon and left to watch the city burn. However, to his amazement, the entire city of Nineveh, even their king repented. Furious at this change of events, Jonah, sulked outside the city cursing God for his goodness and mercy. In reply, God gives both him and us a lesson of what it means to have mercy and love what God loves.

Jonah 4:11
In our previous episode, we heard how Jonah ran from God’s call to preach repentance in Nineveh. Though Jonah’s heart was not merciful toward the Ninevites, God showed mercy to Jonah in the form of a fish who swallowed him and kept him from drowning in the sea. Jonah finally cried out in praise, acknowledging that salvation came from God alone. After three days the fish spat the prophet out safely onto dry land. Today we’ll discover how Nineveh responded to God’s Word, and see if Jonah’s heart toward these wicked people had indeed softened.
