A Great Kings Downfall

A Great Kings Downfall

The people of God needed a strong, courageous, godly King, and Uzziah provided that hope for the people. The young man was sixteen when he sat on the throne, and he sought God for wisdom just like Solomon did. He leaned on this wisdom of his elders and held the word of the prophet close. He sought God, fought battles against the Philistines, and gained the respect of the nations around him. However, as the stories about him grew, so did his ego. And in his arrogance, he walked into the temple of God without a priest and began to burn incense, as if he were a priest, beginning his downfall.

2 Chronicles 26:18
In our previous episode, we heard about King Amaziah’s downfall. Though he at first sought to follow God and trust him, his wavering faith opened the door to doubt and resentment. He stopped trusting God’s goodness and turned to idols and self-gratification. Ultimately he died in defeat and with a heart filled with resentment, still clinging to gods with no real power and no comfort for him. Today we’ll learn of a truly great king, a man who exhibited many of the best traits of David and Solomon. But though he was one of the great kings of Judah, he was also a man prone to sin and filled with brokenness, as we all are.
